let_the_right_one_in_swedishIf you’re the kind who likes an intelligent horror movie and don’t mind a little blood, you need to see Let The Right One In.  Its a Swedish movie about a 12 year old boy who strikes up a friendship with the little girl who moves in next door.  Making friends with a vampire turns out to have advantages as well as drawbacks.

I’m apparently not up on my vampire lore, because there were two bits in the movie that I’d never heard before.  The first is that cats don’t like vampires.  But the interesting one was that a vampire can’t come into your home without being invited.  That may only be true for Swedish vampires, so don’t count on it.  I think that must be what the title is referencing.

Reading some online reviews, I see that people are upset about the subtitles on the DVD.  For some reason they’re different than in the theatrical release and are poorly done.  I didn’t see the theatrical release, but will agree that in some scenes the dialog barely makes sense.  Apparently to quell the uproar, the producers are preparing a revised DVD that will have the theatrical subtitles restored.

Oh, Walter, you need to do some research. You may be missing some important vampire info that would cause you to lose some blood! Vampires of course cant be seen in mirrors, and are allergic to garlic (Except for Italian vampires) and afraid of crosses, (except for Jewish of Muslim vampires). And yes, the prevailing wisdom is that they have to be invited in, the first time. But then, All I know about them is from science fiction. And apparently there is a difference in historical vampires and the modern ones.

If you like good movies, try this one. One of the best plot twists I think I have ever seen.

Mick, There’s the issue of what sort of cross works however. Do crossed fingers work, or is an actual crucifix required? Check this video of comedian Eddie Izzard talking about this important issue.

I am well aware of the fine thespian achievements of Denise Richards and Neve Campbell in Wild Things.
