prp200x1501I’m a NPR junkie and found this app, Public Radio Player 2.0, which I’m sure will only feed my addiction. From the looks of it, they’ve compiled dozens of public radio stations around the country that have streaming feeds and podcasts and put them all into one simple app. Very cool!

Along the bottom are buttons for Live, On Demand, Search, Favorites, and More.  More is simply the page for feedback and “about”.

npr001The “Live” button brings up listings of programming that can be listened to live at the current time.  At the top of the screen is “Featured” which lists a few of the big name things on at the moment like “All Things Considered.”  Also at the top is State, Program and Local.  State lists all the live content organized by state.  Program lists it by program name, and Local looks up your current position and shows nearby stations.

On Demand has buttons along the top for Featured, Categories and ABC and deals with podcasts.  Again, Featured are the big name programs, like A Prairie Home Companion – News from Lake Wobegon.  In that case, sadly, its just that segment and not the whole show.  Categories breaks it down into groupings like arts, music, business, etc.  There are 73 categories.  ABC is simply an alphabetical listing.

Search obviously lets you search for whatever you want.  Favorites is where shows you’ve marked as favorite appear.

When you play something, you see a logo which shows a logo for the station or show, and icons indicating Edge, 3G, and wifi.  I presume there must be some programs where only wifi, or 3G are supported, but after a quick random check of a few, I haven’t seen any yet that don’t offer all three.

Also, when playing something there’s a star icon in the upper right that you can press to add the program to your favorites.

You also see the current program and what hours its on and the name and time of the next upcoming program.  If you touch the upcoming program, you will see a list of past episodes of that are available as well for on-demand listening.
