VirtualHost Configuration – First Trial

by on May.27, 2009, under Uncategorized

With permalinks now working, I’d like to figure out how to use Apache’s virtualhosts to make different URLs go to different folders as their root.  www.URL.com, blog.URL.com, and www.URL2.com would go to different folders as their document roots.  My first attempt only partially worked. Playlist: SO3 – Lose The Girl

by on May.24, 2009, under Uncategorized

so3Since finding the Amazon.com widget for easily putting legal song samples online, I decided I’d try to feature a different album/CD/download (whatever the kids are calling them these days) each weekend.  They won’t necessarily be new, but will simply be a favorite of mine, and maybe not so well known.  Last week was The Detroit Cobras (just pretend it was posted on the weekend.) This weekend is SO3 and their album, Lose The Girl. (continue reading…)

Playlist: Detroit Cobras

by on May.19, 2009, under Uncategorized

detroit_cobrasAmazon.com listed Detroit Cobras as a recommendation for me.  I’d never heard of them, but after giving them a listen, I decided Amazon.com knew what they were talking about.  I found several used CDs and have really enjoyed them.   Detroit Cobras seem to be entirely built around finding obscure early rock-n-roll songs and updating them with a modern garage band sound. The embedded player below plays selections from their CD “Baby”.  Favorites are the downtempo “It’s Raining” and “Just Can’t Please You.”

Irritrol PC-Control Irrigation

by on May.17, 2009, under Uncategorized

I thought I’d do a little review of the Irritrol lawn irrigation controller they call, unimaginatively, PC-Control.  Its a hardware package with a Windows software module that provides for detailed scheduling and smart operation of a lawn irrigation system.  [Updated July 10, 2009 with information about program errors.][New version 2.0.37 beta software is available and hopefully will be more stable. Screenshot of new software below.] (continue reading…)

Secure VNC Remote Control Using SSH

Angelina Jolie in Hackers

OK, so maybe Angelina hacking into your computer isn’t so bad, but in general, keeping things secure is a good thing.  So thanks again to Steve from OZLUG for helping get me started accessing my Linux machine via VNC through a SSH tunnel for security.  VNC is an open source remote control program that provides the same sort of capabilities as commercial products like LogMeIn and GoToMyPC.  Unlike those products though, VNC has no built-in security encryption, so any work done through VNC is subject to eavesdropping.  These notes describe how to use SSH to generate a secure tunnel that is then used by VNC to make its connection.  They’re as much for me as for anyone else who might find it useful. RCA Digital TV Converter Box

by on May.14, 2009, under Uncategorized

dta800With the weather report predicting heavy weather last night, I took the opportunity in the early evening to move an old TV to my basement where there’s no cable hookup and plugged it into an RCA DTA800 digital converter box. This is my first time using one of these and it really makes you appreciate cable TV. (continue reading…)

XBMC – “Babylon” update

by on May.12, 2009, under Uncategorized

xbmc

At least a year ago, I got an old used Xbox console and modded it to run linux and installed XBMC.  I used it for awhile to stream video to a TV, then something happened and it got unplugged and I didn’t use it again until now.  The latest XBMC version, Babylon, has been released and I decided to try it again.

One Step URL Update for Posts

by on May.12, 2009, under Uncategorized

After making a change to the URL for the blog, I discovered that links to all the photos broke. I figured the easiest way to fix them would be through editing the mysql database and managed to figure out how to change every affected link in every post in one step. (continue reading…)
