Forgotten Cold War Era Nuke Technology May Be The Ultimate Green Energy

by on Dec.26, 2009, under Uncategorized

What nuclear fuel can be carried safely in your pocket, has a nearly inexhaustible supply in nature, leaves minuscule waste, and can run a reactor that could fit within a medium sized suburban house?  Need a hint?  Its named after a Norse god and was pretty much forgotten about by the nuclear power industry because it was too safe. Let It Snow Plugin Mods

by on Dec.24, 2009, under Uncategorized

The Let It Snow plugin for WordPress is a nice little plugin to add a snowfall effect.  The snow falls just a tad faster than I’d like, even on its slowest setting, but what they heck.  I thought it would be nice if it was triggered by date, so its not necessary to remember to turn it off.  Snowfall in June would look weird, at least in this part of the world.  Adding a date trigger wasn’t hard.  [Update: Added another mod so that on New Years Eve, the snow flakes are colored like confetti.  And also discovered that snowfall still shows on the simplified WPTouch formatted site on iPhone.] (continue reading…)

The Detroit Cobras 2009 Tour Poster Gallery

by on Dec.24, 2009, under Uncategorized

I wrote about The Detroit Cobras’ music a few months ago and have been following them on Twitter.  They just put up a gallery of really cool images of their 2009 tour posters on Facebook.  I especially like this one because it reminds me of 60s psychedelic rock art.  Bigger image after the break. Keep Daily Top 10 Posts From Counting Admin Hits

by on Dec.23, 2009, under Uncategorized

Since installing the Daily Top 10 Posts (DTTP) plugin, I’d been trying to figure out a way to keep it from counting my own visits.  A few hours of thinking on it, and a few aborted attempts over the last week yielded nothing.  Then I learned of a wordpress function that made it pretty easy. The House of the Devil

by on Dec.22, 2009, under Uncategorized

hod_movieLike Dead Snow, here’s another small movie making the art house rounds that looks fun.  The House of the Devil.  Rottentomatoes.com ranks it at 87% positive with critics, 80% positive with top critics, and 73% positive with viewers.  I love the first sentence of Roger Ebert’s 3 star review.  “Has there ever been a movie where a teenage baby-sitter enjoyed a pleasant evening?” [Updated since seeing the movie] (continue reading…)

Custom “Tweet This” Link

by on Dec.21, 2009, under Uncategorized

I wanted to try to put a “tweet this” icon after each post, but didn’t really want to bother with another plugin to do it, so after a little research I came up with my own.  Adding a Facebook icon was similar. (continue reading…)

The Road – A Bleak Movie For Christmas

by on Dec.20, 2009, under Uncategorized

The Road, starring Viggo Mortenson, finally made it to the local independent cinema.  Its one of those movies that makes you think about how you’d react in the same situation.  Based on a Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Cormac McCarthy, its set in an utterly defoliated, devastated world due to an unexplained disaster where a father and son trudge on foot toward the coast, scavenging for food and trying to avoid danger, hoping to find a semblance of comfort.  Cheery holiday fare, indeed.  My choice was between that or The House of the Devil.  Maybe I’ll save that for Christmas Eve. YOURLS for Self-hosted Short URLs

by on Dec.19, 2009, under Uncategorized

yourlsIf you don’t want to depend on an external short URL service like bit.ly or tinyurl.com and you have access to your MySQL database, you can install and run your own with YOURLS.  I managed to get it up and running in about an hour in Linux.  The instructions at yourls.org mentions that an installation alongside WordPress is a bit different than the one described for a standard site.  I found that to be true, and have described what I found worked after the break.
