Mythbuntu – Another Try

by on Apr.22, 2009, under Uncategorized

Tried fiddling again with MythTV to get it working better and was again stymied by one of those linux things that will raise your blood pressure.  Screen resolution.  Why is choosing a screen resolution so darn difficult?

In my previous post, Mythbuntu – First Try, I failed to mention that while things worked, I was never able to get the screen resolution the card in that box can deliver.  Its a nVidia FX5200 graphics card that should be able to give me very good resolutions with good color depth, but the best I’m getting from Mythbuntu is 800×600 using linux drivers.  It was nice enough to notify me that a compatible nVidia driver was available, but after giving it a try, the best it will do is 640×480.

On the off chance that the problem was Mythbuntu itself, I deleted that installation and reinstalled with standard Ubuntu 8.04 and ran into the exact same problem.  It seems that the supplied drivers and that nVidia driver either don’t like this particular box, or I’m doing something else wrong.

At 800×600 the resolution isn’t high enough for me to see the full menu on some of the MythTV screens, so until I get this resolution thing hammered out, I guess I’m done fiddling with MythTV on that box.
