Roku 2 XS first impressions

First impression! LOVE IT! Second Impression, Why the F won’t a couple of things work?! [Updates below. Both issues were not Roku’s fault.]]

Setup couldn’t really be much easier. There’s a guided setup where you set the timezone and then it gives you a code that you enter at Roku.com. Done. My Roku @ XS came preset with Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, Vudu Movies, and Pandora(?). I took Hulu and Vudu off because they’re already available through my TV. I’ll use this primarily for Amazon Instant Video because it also will play Amazon Prime video. I added two apps, Plex and Radio Paradise. Plex connects over the LAN to a computer to stream movies and music that I already own. Radio Paradise is an internet radio station that I’ve come to love so much, I specifically made sure there was a Roku channel for it before asking for the device for Christmas.

Setup hit a snag though when I tried to connect to my wired network. It detected the ethernet connection but never connected to my local network. Router logs show that the router has recognized it and offered it an IP address but it seems as if the Roku hasn’t accepted that IP address. It connected fine over wireless. [Turns out that my electrician that installed the Ethernet cabling wired the jack wrong. With that fixed, it connects to the wired network immediately.]

The second thing that didn’t work right was the Plex app. It can’t find my Plex server and again, I’m not sure why not, but I have a suspicion. I have a wireless router than runs encrypted wifi on the 192.168.1.x subnet, and open wifi for guests on a 192.168.2.x subnet. For ease of setup, I let the Roku connect to the guest network. My suspicion is that the 192.168.2.x subnet can’t see the Plex server on the 192.168.1.x subnet. If that’s the case, it should fix itself when I move the Roku to the regular private wifi network, or get the wired connection working. [Yep, that was the problem. Once it’s on the same subnet, Plex works perfectly, and it’s wonderful! More to come on Plex and the Roku in a future post.]

Watching video on the Roku is very nice. I watched “Battlestar Galactica: Razor” and “Tucker & Dale vs. Evil”. Both were free on Amazon prime and played fine with excellent 1080p pictures. Later I put on Episode 1 of Gilligan’s Island.

This is gonna be fun.
