Stripping EXIF Data from Photos Before Uploading

by on Nov.29, 2011, under Blogging, iPhone, Linux

While uploading some photos recently for a post from my iPhone, it dawned on me that being taken with the iPhone, they had GPS metadata in them.  Sites like Facebook routinely strip that data from uploaded photos, but I wondered if WordPress did.  Nope. (continue reading…)

Bamboo Floor Installation in a Basement Bedroom

by on Nov.18, 2011, under Equipment

Last week, my girlfriend, N, and I embarked on a project to put down an engineered bamboo floor from Calibamboo.com in a basement bedroom and closet area (a total of about 300 sq.ft.) It was a lot of work, but we’re very happy with the results. [Update: Cali Bamboo has put this up for project of the month for December 2011.  You can vote for it at Project of the Month] (continue reading…)

Audiogalaxy Not Indexing All Music – Fixed

by on Oct.24, 2011, under Media Streamers

I’d been having a problem for months with my Audiogalaxy installation not indexing all my music.  Some artists where there, and other’s simply wouldn’t ever show up in the index.  Posts to AG’s help forum mainly came back that my music was probably mis-tagged, but that wasn’t it.  I was stumped.  Finally, today, I discovered what the problem was, and it was my fault after all. One Last Firefox / Google Toolbar Update (for now)

by on Oct.03, 2011, under Firefox

With Firefox’s rapid updates, it’s become increasingly bothersome having to go into that install.rdf file and edit it each time to the current version number (see here). So I tried a little change, and it worked. Instead of updating the maxversion number to just whatever it needed to be, I changed it from “7.0.*” to “*.0.*”. It worked.

Another Reprieve for Google Toolbar and Firefox 6 users

by on Sep.16, 2011, under Firefox

Well it looked like Google or Firefox finally did something to completely break the Google Toolbar, but there’s another work around.  I’ve written previously here about how to get Google Toolbar working with Firefox 5 and up.  But in the last week or so, it became impossible to sign into the toolbar to have access to Google Bookmarks.  Here’s a fix for that. Ryobi TEK4 Laser Measure Review

by on Aug.26, 2011, under Dissonance

Every so often through work I have to measure an existing building so it’s floor plan can be drawn in CAD. Normally I do that with a standard tape measure or measuring wheel.  I’ve tried ultrasonic devices, but they don’t work in lots of situations.  I recently ran across this Ryobi Tek4 Laser Measure device on a closeout sale and recently had a chance to try it out on a job.  I’m sold.  This thing work’s great. WiRNS to the Rescue

by on Jul.23, 2011, under ReplayTV, Windows

I’ve used ReplayTV DVRs for over a decade after getting into their beta testing program and having them send me free hardware with lifetime activation. Not a bad gig. I still love them, even though they don’t record HD, because of their local network streaming ability. Of course, ReplayTV has basically been out of business for several years now, yet they kept the server operational so users could still get program guide data. Unfortunately, as of July 31, the ReplayTV server is shutting down, which means no more program guide and the units become essentially useless. Enter WiRNS.

How NOT To Dry a Wet iPhone

by on Jul.18, 2011, under iPhone

I just returned home from a Florida vacation and unfortunately learned that my iPhone was officially dead after an incident where I accidentally left it in my swimsuit pocket and went in the resort pool.  It’s quite a sinking feeling when standing in 4′ of water and realize you’re phone’s still in your pocket.  I thought I did the right thing though to save it, but alas, no.  All those recommendations about rice.. forget it unless it was just a splash.
