Stripping EXIF Data from Photos Before Uploading
by walter on Nov.29, 2011, under Blogging, iPhone, Linux
While uploading some photos recently for a post from my iPhone, it dawned on me that being taken with the iPhone, they had GPS metadata in them. Sites like Facebook routinely strip that data from uploaded photos, but I wondered if WordPress did. Nope. (continue reading…)
How NOT To Dry a Wet iPhone
by walter on Jul.18, 2011, under iPhone
I just returned home from a Florida vacation and unfortunately learned that my iPhone was officially dead after an incident where I accidentally left it in my swimsuit pocket and went in the resort pool. It’s quite a sinking feeling when standing in 4′ of water and realize you’re phone’s still in your pocket. I thought I did the right thing though to save it, but alas, no. All those recommendations about rice.. forget it unless it was just a splash. (continue reading…)

by walter on Jun.16, 2011, under iPhone, Media Streamers
Just a quickie review by iPhone while on the road. Lots of reviews I saw of the iTrip DualConnect mentioned that it didn’t work well with the iPhone 4. My experience is that it works as advertised with a bonus. (continue reading…)
iPhone / Google Voice Voicemail Playback Fix
by walter on Mar.04, 2010, under iPhone
I’ve had trouble lately with the voicemail “play” button not working in Google’s mobile web app for Google Voice. Nor would it work from the native iPhone mail app or the Gmail web app. Found the problem though. (continue reading…)
Use a Custom Icon for Any iPhone Web Clip
by walter on Jan.14, 2010, under iPhone
In a previous post, I described how to make custom iPhone and iTouch icons for web pages you host yourself. That procedure couldn’t be done for web pages you didn’t control, such as a Google Spreadsheet. Here’s an option for creating custom icons for that sort of situation as well. (continue reading…)
Custom iPhone / iTouch Icons
by walter on Dec.17, 2009, under Blogging, iPhone
With any web page displaying on your iPhone or iTouch you can tap the + sign and either make a bookmark, or add an icon to the home screen as a web clip. When you make a web clip it ordinarily takes a square screen capture of the top portion of the page and uses that image for the icon. Its just come to my attention that Apple has made a way for website administrators to create a custom image for that icon to be used instead. [Updated after the break] (continue reading…)
NPR iPhone App
by walter on Jul.21, 2009, under iPhone, Media Streamers
I’m a NPR junkie and found this app, Public Radio Player 2.0, which I’m sure will only feed my addiction. From the looks of it, they’ve compiled dozens of public radio stations around the country that have streaming feeds and podcasts and put them all into one simple app. Very cool! (continue reading…)
Crossfire – iPhone Web App
by walter on Jun.18, 2009, under Cross Platform, iPhone, Media Streamers
I’ve been using the open source Crossfire music streaming web app on my iPhone for awhile now, but a recent update has made it much more reliable. Crossfire requires the Firefly media server be installed and operating on the computer where your music is stored. It then provides a web based interface that you can browse to with the iPhone or iPod Touch to play your music. Basically, it makes it as if your device has unlimited song storage capacity. No jailbreak process is required. (continue reading…)
iPhone Optimization

Readers with iPhones can now see an optimized version of this site thanks to the addiition of the iWPhone plugin. As the opportunity arrives, I may work on changing the color scheme to better match the standard colors.
Roku Remote Control Apps
by walter on Jun.07, 2009, under Cross Platform, iPhone, Soundbridge
It’s been perfect weather this weekend and I’ve spent the evenings out on the deck enjoying the breeze and listening to music from a Roku Soundbridge that’s connected to some outdoor speakers. The catch was having to go back inside to make changes to what was playing or adjust the volume. I found two solutions without leaving the chaise lounge. (continue reading…)
