Laser Mice!

Not nearly as dangerous as Laser Cats, but significantly more real, is the new technology of controlling mouse (live, not computer) behavior with light pulses to the brain. Wired magazine has reported that researchers have succeeded in activating specific neurons in the brains of mice by illuminating them with light. Neurons, which aren’t ordinarily light sensitive, were made so by infecting the mouse brain with a virus that carried a gene from photosensitive algae.

So apparently blue rats aren’t good enough. Scientists have succeeded in getting rats with spinal cord injuries to walk again, this time without even bothering to repair the spine. Again, why would anyone have thought to even try this method?
