Windows Apps in Linux with Wine
by walter on Jun.24, 2009, under Linux, Windows
In an effort to see if I could reasonably dump Windows entirely, I decided to get my feet wet running a windows application in Ubuntu using Wine. I only have three applications I use on a regular basis that still tie me to Windows. iTunes, EAC (Exact Audio Copy), and PC-Control. With iTunes and EAC my first attempt was only partially successful. (continue reading…)

by walter on Jun.12, 2009, under Cross Platform, Media Streamers

Lifehacker.com has found another interesting looking media center for playback of movies, TV Shows, music, photos, and Internet media called Moovida. The interface is nice looking and is optimized for playback on a TV in HD. Cross-platform for Linux, Windows and Mac (pending). See the Lifehacker article and Moovida site for screenshots and feature lists.

While I rely on Carbonite to save me from disaster, I use Dropbox as a simple convenience when I’m needing to work on a file from multiple locations. (continue reading…)
Carbonite Adds Remote File Access
by walter on Apr.24, 2009, under Windows
I’ve used Carbonite for a few years ever since having to cross my fingers that some data could be recovered from a crashed hard drive. The weakness in their system has always been that backed up files could only be accessed from the computer they originated from. No longer.
Subsonic Music Streamer

This looks interesting. From the Subsonic website “Subsonic is a free, web-based media streamer, providing ubiquitous access to your music. Use it to share your music with friends, or to listen to your own music while at work. You can stream to multiple players simultaneously, for instance to one player in your kitchen and another in your living room. (continue reading…)
